# Step: Cohort

> Group users who reach this step around the same time into a shared Slack channel.

The **Cohort** step groups users who reach it within the same time window into a
shared Slack channel. It's perfect for onboarding classes, training cohorts, or any
program where people who start together should get to know each other.

<Info>
  The Cohort step needs new Slack permissions (scopes) so Doozy can create cohort
  channels for you. If you can't see Cohort steps in your track builder,
  [update Doozy](https://doozy.live/app/update-slack) to grant the new permissions.
</Info>

<Note>Only one Cohort step is allowed per track.</Note>

## ⚙️ Configuration

### Grouping window

Users are grouped into a cohort based on when they reach this step:

| Setting              | Description                                                                    |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Window frequency** | How often a new cohort channel is opened - daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly |
| **Anchor day** | The day of the week the window starts on |

Everyone who reaches the step within the same window joins the same channel.

### Channel

| Setting                   | Description                                                                      |
| ------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Channel type** | Whether the cohort channel is public or private |
| **Channel name template** | The naming pattern Doozy uses when it creates each cohort channel |
| **Permanent members** | People added to every cohort channel - for example program leads or facilitators |
| **Welcome message** | An optional message posted when the channel is created |

## 📬 Unlocked Destinations

Once a Cohort step has run, later steps can post to the **cohort channel**, so the
whole group receives messages, quizzes, or surveys together.

## ⭐ Best Practices

1. **Match the window to your intake** - Weekly windows suit steady hiring; monthly suits larger classes
2. **Add facilitators as permanent members** - So every cohort has a consistent point of contact
3. **Open with a welcome message** - Tell the group why they're together and what to expect
4. **Follow up in the channel** - Use later steps to post shared content to the cohort

## 🎯 Common Use Cases

* **Onboarding classes**: Everyone who joins in the same week onboards together
* **Training cohorts**: Group learners progressing through a program
* **Bootcamps & programs**: Build community among participants who start together
