# Step: Mentor Assignment

> Automatically pair users with mentors from a designated pool.

The **Mentor Assignment** step pairs the track participant with a mentor from your designated pool. Doozy creates a group DM between them and enables subsequent steps to message the mentor or the pair. Smart matching balances workload across mentors.

<Note>Only one mentor assignment step is allowed per track.</Note>

## ⚙️ Configuration

### Mentor Pool

Choose where mentors are selected from:

| Source | Description |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| **Specific People** | Handpick individual users as mentors |
| **Slack Channel Members** | All members of a channel |
| **Groups** | Members of organizational groups |

### Delivery Time

* **Immediate**: Leave blank to assign when step triggers
* **Scheduled**: Select a time (e.g., 9:00 AM), based on user's timezone

## 🧠 Smart Matching

Doozy uses round-robin matching that considers:

* **Workload balancing**: Distributes assignments evenly across the pool
* **Location**: Prefers mentors in similar locations
* **Timezone**: Prefers mentors in similar timezones

## 📬 Unlocked Destinations

After this step, you can send messages to:

| Destination | Use For |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Mentor** | Private guidance, check-ins with the mentor only |
| **Mentor & User** | Group DM welcome messages, shared resources, check-in prompts |

<Warning>Always add a message step to the group DM after assignment so both parties know they've been paired!</Warning>

## ⭐ Best Practices

1. **Size your pool**: 5-10 mentors per 20-30 mentees prevents burnout
2. **Notify immediately**: Send a group DM welcome right after assignment
3. **Set expectations**: Share mentor guidelines in the first message
4. **Schedule check-ins**: Use delays and messages to prompt engagement
5. **Collect feedback**: Add surveys at key milestones
