The trigger decides how people enter a track. Each trigger type suits different use cases, from onboarding to learning and development to HR processes.

Available Trigger Types

First day

Runs on someone’s first day, once they’ve joined Slack.

Manual enrollment

Enroll people from the dashboard or via the API.

On a schedule

Runs on a recurring schedule for a set of people.

Work anniversary

Runs around people’s work anniversaries.

Cohort starts

Runs once when a cohort opens, in the cohort’s timezone.

Person joins cohort

Runs for each person at the cohort start, in their own timezone.
The two cohort triggers appear once Cohorts is enabled for your workspace - it’s rolling out gradually.

Two more ways people enter a track

These aren’t trigger types you pick, so they don’t appear in the trigger picker. They work alongside whichever trigger the track already has:
  • Self-enrolled: turn on self-join and people can add themselves. See Self-join tracks.
  • Added by another track: an “add to track” step in one track enrolls people into another, so a track can hand off to a follow-up.

Advanced Filtering

Every trigger offers advanced filtering options to ensure your tracks reach the right people (for a Cohort track, filters apply to its “For each person” run mode):
  • Filter by Group/Department: Target specific organizational units
  • Filter by Country or Work Location: Target people by where they are
  • Filter by Manager Status: Differentiate between managers and individual contributors
For detailed instructions on each trigger type, explore the individual trigger guides or check out our track creation guide.
